apartment repair

I live in an apartment in S. California and I’m a month/month rent tenant.
My sink got clogged up and I ask the manager to have it fixed. She came over with that un-clogging liquid stuff and poured it into my sink and I guess it fixed it.
She told me that I have to pay for the product price because she bought it and fixed it for me.
I was kind of confused because I have lived in other apartments and no matter what the manager or owner fixed it for me with no expense.
Who’s right…whos not……or it all depends on what apartment you live on? Owner is responsible or me? I don’t know…=(

My assignment is to make up a story about a families life during the Great Depression so I wrote this. It’s kinda long and I doubt anybody would actually read through the whole thing but oh well.

The Great Depression

The Depression Begins

Ding Ding Ding Ding Ding. The sound of the bell in the New York Stock Exchange located in New York City, New York woke me up from my slight snooze. My father, waiting patiently at the right of me, elbowed my chest. I quickly shot up and was ready to start another day as a stock broker/computer technician. The giant room filled with many lights, numbers, and old men with blue suits filled the area. My father and I went our separate ways to where we were needed. He was a stockbroker who occasionally played the stock market and was quite good at it. I am currently following in his footsteps. On my way to my small desk with a bunch of papers spread on my beige colored desk. A small calculation machine that was slowly rusting but still shiny sat across from my comfortable chair to my right. I slowly sat down and exhaled. My work was about to begin.
I do what any other good stockbroker does: give advice and sell. It was a good job, paid high and had great benefits. Today was no different. Since the “Roaring 20’s,” the stock market became what was known as a bull type of market (1). Almost everybody was making quick money with little effort. Those who know what they were doing made even more, like my dad. Anyways, after the usual day was over, filled with prosperity, I walked home. We, along with my mom and two brothers, lived only a block away in a fancy apartment complex. On my way there, I noticed peoples pockets full of money with big gleaming smiles plastered on their faces. Automobiles (2) filled the streets. Since Henry Ford created the assembly line, the automotive business exponentially grew. It was only available in black, but no one cared. It was the first car that almost everybody could afford. These were affluent times indeed.
There was this flat tire of a woman on a dull rocking chair who had this terrible Brooklyn accent. Whenever I approach the main doors, she kept on repeating the stock market was going to crash over and over again. I just wanted to reach down her throat and correct her larynx so she talked normally. No matter, I happily whistled through the well-cleaned corridors that were filled with shiny doorknobs, clean doormats, and people with lovely suits on. I strode over to my apartment number, A5, and got out the key. When I entered, the fresh smell of Pljeskavica, a type of Serbian hamburger made with rich meat filled the room and made its way to my taste buds.
Its aroma was overpowering and I could not help but drool a bit. My mom, an affable woman, was baking in the granite kitchen. Expensive spices were on her left while stainless steel knives and other various equipment to her right. She was hacking away at another cuisine.
“Mother, hello.” I greeted her.
“Hello, Viktor. How are you doing? How was work?”
“Work was nice. The stock market is continuing to rise so that means more money for us. Dad will probably work late again to squeeze out as much money as he can out of other people.”
“I see…that is what he is good at so more money for us!”
“Yeah, I guess.”
My father was an extreme conservative (3) so he enjoyed money so much that he became a workaholic in the past month. With the stock market being as it is, he made even more money. “The wonderful green stuff” as he would like to call it. The way that he would earn his paycheck is that many people started to buy on margin (4), meaning on credit. They would come to him, asking for money and saying that they would pay him back later as they sell their stock and he charges a fee based on the stock. They were pretty much speculators (5) and my father, having graduated from numerous colleges in Serbia with many degrees in international business/stock, took advantage of this. I, having faced the horrors of World War I at the age of 16, came over with my family to New York along with my two brothers to find a better life. I grew up to respect other people, be tolerable of them, and have a great education. So, I decided to follow my father because I also loved money. Anyways, my brothers came in at around this time.
“Hey mom, bro”.
“Hey guys,” I greeted them. My mom went up to them and each gave them a kiss on the cheek. They were both twins and in the 12th grade and absolutely loved working with their hands. They planned to start their own mechanics shop after high school and my parents both agreed since the automobile caused many other companies to boom. We conversed for a while, me reminiscing about what I did today, and we all sat down to have dinner. After the fabulous dinner, I excused myself and decided to head ou

What are my chances for mortgage pre-approval?

I started out with a terrible credit score, but in the past month I have paid all my debts off with the exceptions of my school loans which are deferred because I am pursuing another degree. I have put out nearly $3000 to pay off all the medical bills and an old credit card that was listed on my report. There are quite a few “charge off’s” listed on the report and a couple of entries for companies that no longer exist to determine what the balance was for……GRRR (I don’t know what they are) I am currently in good standings with my car payment.

I really want to apply for a pre-approval for a mortgage, but I am unsure if paying all of this debt off will have affected my scores any. I would like to apply for that mortgage in February or March, so I am applying for a secured credit card that is willing to report to a credit agency that I stay in good standings. I really do not wish to renew my lease at my current apartment come May and I am hoping to find a mortgage for a house in the low 90’s, but I really fear not being pre-approved and getting stuck having to sign again for another year in an unsafe neighborhood.

Can anyone help me with this dilemma. This is trying and stressful to say the least. Thanks for not sending rude answers or things that make no sense. I appreciate all of you out there that answer with the intentions of really helping someone in need. Thank you all!

Do I need good credit to rent a flat?

rent back flat

I am looking to rent a flat through an estate agent in the near future. I have a permanent job and a decent salary. However, I have credit card debt on one card in the UK (£3,000) and credit card debt in another country when I used to live abroad. Would any of this prevent me from renting a property in the UK? Would the credit card debt here in the UK and in the foreign country go against me when trying to rent a place even though I can show evidecne of my permanent job and good salary?

I don’t mind just a bedroom rental somewhere instead of an entire flat and i wouldn’t be moving until late 2008 anyway. The thing is I don’t have that much money to be spending on rent and my job over there probably won’t be paying a great deal either. Thanks for whatever help you can give me!

I am a 27 year old man, and throughout my life my father told me one thing and one thing only. “whatever you do, Do Not Go into debt.”
Well, this was one fine and good life lesson, I thought. But upon second glance now, it may not have been.
My current situation is that my wife and I have lived on our own in an apartment for about 10 months now, and we know the next logical step to start a family and become more secure is to own a home. Well, without a down payment for this, we looked into alternate methods of owning a home and land. This is where my main issue came from. Turns out through always paying for all I get without much obligation and sticking to the advice given to me, I have no lines of credit. I have a washer and a dryer payed off like 7 years ago under my name, but besides that, I have nothing.
After consulting someone who knows credit fairly well they suggested going to a credit union and borrowing a small loan and after several times paying these off it should rise significantly.
One tiny little problem. I found out today I can not get a loan at any of them without credit. WTF? I thought. I need to build credit, and one of the resources to build it, calls for decent credit to afford. Pointless to argue though. So basically I started a checking and savings account with them, while I already have a bank account, and this serves no purpose. My wife and I have been feeling the pressures especially lately since our apartment building is not the safest, and the stimulus package Obama has initiated. Since this is only for the rest of this year, I’m giving up the hope for that, but despite that fact I still want to own our own home some time in the next year or so.
So I am stuck with the opposite of bad credit, which is NO credit. I always thought not having debts was a great thing, but as I say now, that is evidently mistaken.
My question is this. Where do I start, and how is the easiest way to go about this without going in over my head here? Any help is much appreciated.

flat mortgage

Where do I start if I’m thinking about buying a first flat? How do I know how much I can afford? What does that relate to mortgage repayments? How much will i need every month to cover everything? Any good calculators online for this or any good book s for first time buyers with no idea where to start?
