Try out Angieslist.com. it will cost you something like 5 dollars to sign up (not sure on that one) and you get access to all the contractors in your area who do whatever kind of work you are looking to have done. Past customers rate the contractors and even sometimes leave comments, you get a general idea of what they will do, what price ranges they will take work within (i.e. job must be above 2500 stuff like that). It will give you a whole lot of customers views instead of just one or two customers views on the contractor.
you need to find 3-5 contractors from either the newspaper, trade magazine, referal from lumber yards, or go by projects that are in progress… don’t hire anyone without checking out their work, references and yes their license… ask question of the people they have done work for, are they punctual (show when they said they were), within budget (no extras), did they give a schedule and stick to it (did they start when they said they were, and finish when they said they were)… and were they happy with the overall project?
