Electricity and gas meters are a very expensive way of paying for utilities - the unit charges are generally much higher than if you pay on a monthly or quarterly basis. Having a water meter however is often more economical than paying the standard bill, especially if you live alone and won't be using a lot of water.

In the summer, you can expect your utility bills to be fairly low. In winter, when you heat your flat, they may well be. My average quarterly gas bill in summer is £30, when I only heat hot water once a day to shower. In winter, when I have the central heating on a lot, it can be over £100.

Also check before you agree to rent a flat how the water is heated and whether the flat has central heating. A good combi boiler which heats water for washing/showering and for central heating is much more efficient and uses much less gas or electricity than an immersion tank. Gas central heating is more economical generally than old-fashioned gas wall heaters or electric heaters.
