when we signed our last lease we were given a free month. since then my husband has joined the service and now has orders for us to be stationed out of state. i know we do not have to pay out the rest of our rent, but do we have to pay back the free month?? the lease says nothing about military families/ SCRA.

Why don’t you call the people who are in charge of your lease?
You should not have to pay it back. That was for signing the lease. You lived up to your part of the agreement. They could try to get money back by sticking you with charges on the deposit or damages.
I would read the fine print in the lease - if you can’t get an answer from that get some advice from the JAG folks.
