rent flat

I am looking to move to the Whitehaven / Egremont / St. Bees area to start a new job. What is the easiest way to find accommodation? Are there adverts in local papers, for example? I have tried a couple of letting agents and these are expensive and require a lot of advance rent. I am hoping to find a flat or small house to rent for a long time.
